Every year since 2022 , a photo of a cheese and onion sandwich from a pub in England goes viral — a thick slice of white cheddar cheese, thick cut white onions, and layer of salad cream sandwiched between a soft roll — and every year it and causes light discourse on social media about the difference between food in the USA and England. 

At first I found this sandwich — or what folks across the pond would call a cob — comically unappetizing. But as it continues to show up in my feed over the past four years, I’ve developed a sort of a Stockholm Syndrome relationship with this English delicacy. 

So I decided to assemble a panel of my British friends to help me satisfy my curiosity: Natalia Ford, a food blogger based in Bedford, England, Dominic Preston, who writes the London-based food and restaurant newsletter called Braise (also news editor at The Verge, my coworker), and my longtime friend Gemma Freeman, from who works at a pub in Wolverhampton that offers cheese and onion cobs. 

Also my friend, cohost of School Lunch Program, brewer, and former sandwich artist Matthew Bellemare joined me on the American team.
