I took a trip to Akron, Ohio to discover a salad dressing they named a baseball team after.
When I first heard that the Akron Rubber Ducks; the minor league baseball team in Ohio's Summit County, was changing its name to honor a regional salad dressing for one night only, I knew I had to go to that game.
What salad dressing would represent the city of Akron? Apparently, something called "white French dressing."
Despite diving into numerous rabbit holes about America's relationship to French dressing, I had never heard a "white" variant. According to the Akron Rubber Ducks website, white French dressing is "a smooth creamy textured, tangy salad dressing with hints of garlic flavors and, as the name suggests, a white hue."
I spent about four days in northern Ohio to talk to some folks who have first-hand experience with the dressing to try to figure out what white French is exactly, why it's only in Akron, and where it came from.
This was a really fun episode to make, and it's one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy.
